Principal Engineers are ranked higher than Staff Engineers. It’s worth noting that even these accomplished professionals can experience impostor syndrome.
Staff+ engineering is not a standalone position. It combines your role, behaviors, impact, and recognition within the organization. In senior positions, your accountability is primarily to the business and organization rather than yourself. Staff-plus roles are leadership positions, and the support system that helped you get there will gradually disappear in these positions. To remain effective in a Staff-plus role, you must learn to stay aligned with the organizational authority.
Staff+ Engineers are expected to define the technical direction for their team.
