Becoming a great leader only sometimes comes with a management role. You don’t need anyone’s permission to develop your skills and gain experience. Start building your leadership skills today by taking action. Leadership isn’t confined to a specific role but requires certain experiences. However, it often takes courage to show leadership. For instance, speaking out about a complex issue can be an act of leadership. It may involve pointing out something everyone else avoids or highlighting a blind spot in your team. Leadership can take many forms and come from anyone, not just those in positions of authority.

Be clear about your priorities, and don’t spread yourself too thin. Support other leaders who are working to make improvements. Make sure your feedback is constructive. Developing leadership skills is complex and takes time. As Management Consultant Kathy Austin once said, “Managers light a fire under people; leaders light a fire in people.”
