All core human needs are also represented at the team level. We should establish structures that promote effective collaboration. During this time, transition to a more streamlined engineering delivery process for all teams. Yet, we still empower teams to decide how to implement these processes in their daily work. Teams should also define their own communication and interaction methods.

Investing in the professional development of support engineers is crucial and fundamental. We should inquire about their career aspirations and identify growth milestones. Dependability is expected, with teammates delivering quality work within established timelines. Assigning tasks and setting developmental objectives are critical steps. Furthermore, discussing how to support individuals build upon these efforts. We can help peer learning through code reviews, mentoring, and knowledge sharing. Retrospectives provide a platform to discuss and improve how we collaborate. It’s crucial to remember that the way we discuss failure within our teams shapes our culture.

Apart from cultivating a strong culture, we must ensure alignment and dynamic team involvement. Communicating the strategic direction and relevant tactical details to our teams is vital. You may have heard the analogy of a manager being a protector or a shield for their team, watching over their exceptional plays. Yet, it’s important to remember that our role with our teams is to help them stay aligned and not to create illusions.

Effective communication involves striking a balance between predictability and providing choices. How we engage with our organizations may vary, but our ultimate goal remains the same. Leaders should leverage their influence to drive organizational change.
