Engagement and Purpose for Success
Giving attention to something shapes our identity. Coaching for performance focuses on addressing and resolving specific problems or challenges. The phrase “And what else?” helps uncover more and often better options. Another variation of “And what else?” that invites closure while allowing for further input is “Is there anything else?” This approach uncovers new possibilities. The goal is to generate a manageable number of options. Having better options leads to better decision-making and tremendous success. The more we engage in work without a clear purpose, the less motivated and engaged we become. We need more engagement to ensure our ability to find and create great jobs. When starting a conversation, asking one question at a time is adequate, such as “What’s on your mind?” This question strikes a balance between being too broad and too narrow.
Logic and culture are separate entities. Culture may seem illogical to outsiders, but it is common sense to those immersed in it. When dealing with large organizations, trying to make logical sense of their culture is fruitless. Instead, observe and understand it. Then, consider using logic to work within or change it. Map the existing culture and determine how it aligns with desired outcomes. Organizational stability during change instills confidence, security, and optimism in employees. It allows for calmness, action, and adaptability. Changing work practices can lead to a shift in routines and a different culture. Use a coupled architecture that empowers teams. Make the flow of work visible throughout the value stream. Embrace working in small batches and establish a lightweight change approval process. Improve processes and manage work by setting limits on work-in-progress. Visualize outcomes to watch quality and communication within the team. Encourage a culture of learning and foster collaboration among teams. Support and embody transformational leadership.
