Blameless post-mortems can be a valuable tool for understanding and solving problems. It’s crucial to approach failure with a growth mindset and use it as an opportunity for learning and improvement. Team culture is shaped by how we handle challenges and setbacks.

Creating a culture of continuous learning is crucial for safe teams. Encourage teammates to share knowledge through code reviews, mentoring, and other forms of collaboration. Retrospectives are also helpful to check and improve team dynamics. Rather than blaming individuals for failures, use post-mortems to learn from mistakes and find solutions. We must be mindful of how we discuss loss, as it shapes our team culture. Besides building a positive culture, we must ensure everyone is aligned and involved in team goals. As team leaders, we communicate strategic direction and tactical details. Aim to help teams stay aligned and work together.

Successful teams have a sense of purpose and know that their work makes an impact. It is crucial to meet core human needs at the team level. It’s essential to establish collaborative structures. Yet, teams should have autonomy in deciding how to put in place these structures and how they communicate with each other. These structures can also help prevent the frustration of getting blocked at work. Investing in the progress of support engineers is vital — a fundamental necessity. We can inquire about their career aspirations and what strides signify growth. Assigning tasks and setting developmental objectives is critical. Discussing how to support many individuals builds upon this. It requires embracing that mistakes made with good intentions or seeking help won’t diminish how others perceive us. Safe teams allow people to work together to solve complex problems and learn from each other. Dependability is given, with teammates producing quality work within established timelines.
