Active Listening
“Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something.” ― Plato.
Imagine an entire company made up of only software engineers. Imagine all the decisions being made based on metrics. This seems like a perfect environment, yet, that’s not how companies work, and that’s not how human beings work.
“Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.” — Robin Williams
Understanding someone is far more important than replying to someone. Anyone can respond, and few can understand.
For your next meeting, choose to practice your listening skills. Instead of being the first to say something, wait until everybody shares their ideas and be the last one to speak.
Active listening gives everybody the feeling of being heard. You will enjoy listening to everyone’s ideas before sharing your opinions while reducing misalignments and misunderstandings.
